All our facilities are purpose-built, clean and modern with birthing pools available
in all the birth centres and on the birth suite.
Over 6500 women choose to have their babies at ELHT every year.
We were the first Trust in the world to be awarded the UNICEF Baby Friendly
Initiative Gold Standard accreditation in 2017. This means we consistently
demonstrate best practice standards around infant feeding and relationship
building within maternity services.
Burnley Birth Centre is situated within the Lancashire Women and Newborn unit and is an alongside birth centre which means it is alongside the Birth Suite where women with more complex pregnancies may choose to have their babies.
It provides a holistic approach to midwifery care and promotes active and normal birth processes for those women who are not anticipating any problems. It is staffed by the community midwifery teams of Burnley, Pendle and Rossendale areas.
There is a family centred approach with the emphasis on sensitive midwifery care. Women are encouraged to move through their labour supported by skilled midwives and their choice of birth partners. All staff encourage and promote physiological (natural) birth by recognising and respecting the process of normal birth. The evidence tells us that women who move around in labour and are in a relaxed environment require less pain relieving drugs and often progress through labour more quickly.
There are seven birth rooms in the Burnley Birth Centre. Three of the rooms have birth pools if you wish to use them either for pain relief/relaxation during labour or to birth your baby in water.
